Passport or travel document

This page explains the passport or travel document you must provide to support your application to the post-study worker category (Tier 1 Post-study work) under the points-based system to work in the United Kingdom.

Full details of all requirements are in the immigration rules at paragraphs 245V to 245ZA of part 6a, which you can find on the right of this page. You must read the policy guidance before you apply under this category. You can download the guidance and application form from the Applying section.

How we check your passport or travel document

You must send your original passport(s) or travel document(s) with your application.

We will check your immigration status in the United Kingdom during your period of study and/or research in the United Kingdom. We will cross-check the evidence provided in your application with your relevant passport(s) or travel document(s), to show that for the period of study and/or research in the United Kingdom, you were here as a:

  • student; or
  • student nurse; or
  • student resitting an examination; or
  • student writing up a thesis; or
  • as a dependant of someone with leave in any category that allows dependants to join them in the United Kingdom.

If you are in the United Kingdom and cannot provide the passport(s) or travel document(s) containing the relevant permission to stay, we will confirm your status in the United Kingdom during the period of study and/or research by checking our electronic record.

We will not award any points if you have not sent us the relevant passport(s) or travel document(s), and we cannot confirm your status during the period of study and/or research in the United Kingdom by checking your immigration history using our electronic records. As it will not be possible to award points in this area, we will refuse the application.
