Extensions for work permit holders under the Training and Work Experience Scheme

This page explains how you can apply for permission to extend your stay in the UK (also known as 'further leave to remain') to re-sit an exam or module, if you hold a training work permit granted under the Training and Work Experience Scheme (TWES).

The TWES closed on 27 November 2008, and we will no longer accept applications to the scheme.

However, you may exceptionally apply for an extension if:

  • you are a training work permit holder; and
  • you need to re-sit an exam or module of the training programme for which your training work permit was issued.

Your application may be successful if:

  • you have not yet made two attempts (or possible attempts) at that exam or module; or
  • you have had two attempts (or possible attempts) but only failed narrowly on the second attempt, and your trainer is confident that you will pass on the third attempt; or
  • you provide medical certificates that show you were unwell at the time of one or more sittings of the exam(s).

You should complete your training in the shortest possible time and maintain satisfactory progress. We will not allow you to extend your stay for any other reason.

How to apply

You should apply using application form FLR(O), which you can download this form from the right side of this page. In section three, you should tick 'Other purposes or reasons not covered by other application forms'.

You must include the following with your application:

  • a copy of your previous work permit or work permit approval letter;
  • a letter from your training provider which explains why you need an extension, and the period of additional training required;
  • the dates, results and number of attempts made at each exam, and copies of the results slips;
  • the expected dates of all future examinations, including re-sits; and
  • medical certificates, if appropriate.
