Dumbarton smuggler caught with 3kg of cocaine

03 July 2009

A man from Dumbarton appeared before Dover Magistrates Court yesterday accused of smuggling cocaine worth £120,000 through Dover.

The 44-year-old was arrested by UK Border Agency officers on 30 June, after they found 3kg of the Class A drug hidden in the air vents of a BMW car that had arrived by ferry from Calais.

The case was passed to HM Revenue & Customs investigation officers to continue enquiries.

The man was interviewed and then charged on 1 July. In court he withheld his plea and was remanded in custody until 30 August, when he will appear at Canterbury Crown Court for a committal hearing.

Malcolm Bragg, assistant director of criminal investigation at HM Revenue & Customs, said:

'Our priority, in partnership with the UK Border Agency, is to prevent illegal drugs from entering the UK. We will continue to protect our communities from the violence and corruption that always accompanies this dangerous trade.'
