The independent family returns panel annual report
The Government announced its plans for ending the detention of children for immigration purposes in December 2010. The family unit at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre was closed for the detention of families with children. Instead a new process for removing families who had exhausted all rights to remain in the UK was designed. This involved a four-stage process of improved decision-making, the offer of assisted return, a required return stage and as a last resort an ensured return stage.
