This is internal guidance for use by entry clearance staff on the handling of applications made outside the United Kingdom (UK) for students. It is a live document under constant review and is for information only.

STY5.1 List of main sponsored programmes for overseas students

Please note that applicants applying with the scholarships below will also need to have a visa letter from the licensed educational institution under PBS Tier 4. See Tier 4 guidance on maintenance requirements for officially sponsored students. (The guidance can be downloaded under 'Related documents' on the right side of this page).

1. British Marshall Scholarships - FCO pays for all tuition fees and provide stipends USA
2. Atlantic Fellowships USA

3. Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) (administered by the British Council and the Association of Commonwealth Universities) (jointly funded with DFID)

All Commonwealth countries
4. Chevening Scholars including Jointly Funded Chevening Scholarships (jointly funded by FCO / industry / British universities and other interests) Some specified or all countries

  • Rhodes Scholarships Trust
  • Goethe Institut
  • Hornby Trust (managed by ENTS/GFS)
  • European Young Lawyers (GFS/DATS)
  • Spanish Banks programmes (GFS/DATS)

Many UK companies and universities also have similar sponsorship programmes.
