About the centre

Lindholme immigration removal centre is run under Detention Centre Rules (2001). The centre is adjacent to Lindholme prison and was formerly part of RAF Lindholme. It has been used to accommodate immigration detainees since 2000.

Lindholme is a long-term facility which accommodates detainees awaiting their case resolutions and subsequent removal from the United Kingdom. Lindholme is managed by HM Prison service under a service level agreement with UK Border Agency.

Reception times

Monday to Friday, 0900 to 1930
Saturday to Sunday, 0900 to 1130

Criteria

The centre accommodates males over the age of 21. A maximum of nine can enter the centre each day during the week and a maximum of six at the weekend.

All special needs cases (medical or disruptive) need to be referred in the first instance by means of risk assessments. This is due to the limited medical and secure facilities currently available.

Bed spaces

A total of 112 male beds

Facilities include

  • Doctors appointments are available five mornings (Mon to Fri). A nurse is available seven days a week during the daytime.
  • Lindholme has a well stocked library with material available in a range of languages.
  • Lindholme has a gym which is open to detainees seven days a week. In addition there is an outdoor sports field where detainees can engage in football and other organised sports.
  • English and It classes with qualified teachers are available in the activity centre.
  • Evening activities are also available at Lindholme. These range from pool and snooker competitions to bingo and karaoke.
  • Detainees also have access to a music room where they can use the instruments and listen to music.
  • Detainees have access to the Chapel and Mosque at certain times during the day. There is a programme of religious activities arranged by the religious and cultural affairs manager which includes Friday prayers in the Mosque and Sunday service in the Chapel.
  • Paid work is available in the centre and includes gardening, cleaning and kitchen work. Other work opportunities are currently being assessed.

Directions

Car - Follow the M18 to the M180. Leave the M180 at Junction 1 and turn right, follow the signs for Doncaster and Bawtry. Turn left after approx 1 mile at the Green Tree public house.

Follow the road through the village of Hatfield Woodhouse for approx four miles. HMP Moorland is on your left hand side and approx 300 yards after turn left into Lancaster Drive (signposted HMP Lindholme). HMP Lindholme is in front of you at the bottom of Lancaster Drive. Turn right after the visitors centre (signposted immigration removal centre Lindholme). The entrance to the staff and visitors car park is on the right immediately next to the entrance gates for the Centre.

Train - At Doncaster railway station, either walk to the Doncaster interchange and take the bus 68 to Lindholme, Lancaster Drive or take a taxi to immigration removal centre Lindholme (approx cost £20 - as of Sept 2008)

Bus - Take bus number 68 from Doncaster interchange to Lindholme, Lancaster Drive. Bus timetables are available from the Interchange.

Saturday and Sunday, 1345 to 1600

Visitors are not required to book visits.

Visitors attending the centre will need to provide photographic ID (such as a passport or driving licence) and a utility bill on arrival. Visitors will be subject to search procedures. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in the visits room. Visitors are not able to bring any items in for detainees.

Other information

Detention services now operate a policy which restricts the amount of baggage detainees can have in the centre.
