How do I sponsor a migrant worker?

An interview panel

Area 5: General sponsor duties

This page explains how we rate the way you use your human resource (HR) systems to make sure you are complying with the general sponsor duties described in the sponsor guidance. We may also conduct checks after you have been granted a licence.

What you must do

To make sure that you are complying with our immigration laws and sponsor duties you must ensure that:

  • key personnel ('level 1 user', 'key contact' and 'authorising officer') are permanently based in the UK and notify us of any changes to key personnel;
  • level 2 users do not share sponsor management system (SMS) passwords;
  • any sector specific requirements detailed in the sponsor guidance are adhered to;
  • certificates of sponsorship (CoS) or confirmations of acceptance for study (CAS) have been issued in line with the sponsor guidance;
  • we are informed of any changes to the organisation's details, for example name or address;
  • we are notified of any merger, de-merger, takeover or partial takeover;
  • you inform sponsored students of their term and vacation dates so that they may adhere to the conditions of their leave; and
  • you continue to maintain a valid trading presence.

The list above is not exhaustive and you are advised to ensure that you are up-to-date with any changes reflected in the sponsor guidance, where you will find more information on updates to general sponsor duties.
