What to send with your form to give up British citizenship or status
This page provides details of the documents you will need to supply to us to support your application to give up your British citizenship or other British status.
Evidence of your status
Depending on which citizenship or status you wish to give up, you should send us evidence that you are a British citizen, British overseas citizen, British overseas territories citizen, British subject or British national (overseas).
Normally, your passport will establish your citizenship or status. If you do not have one, send us your birth certificate or a certificate of registration or naturalisation.
If you have your citizenship or status through descent from a parent or grandparent, you must send us documents proving that person's citizenship or status and your relationship to him/her.
Evidence of your future status
You should send us evidence that either:
- you have another citizenship or nationality, or will have one when you have made your declaration to give up your British status. This may be a passport issued to you by the other country of which you are a national, or a statement by the authorities of that country that you are one of its nationals; or
- you are about to become a citizen of another country. This should be a letter from the authorities of the country concerned confirming that you will be granted citizenship of that country when you have given up your British citizenship or status.
Evidence of your marriage (if you are under 18)
If you are under 18 years of age and have been married, you do not need to meet the normal requirement of being over 18 to give up your citizenship or status. You should send us your marriage certificate as evidence.
