The documents we require for registration as a British citizen if you have previously given up your citizenship
This page provides details of the documents you will need to supply to us to support your registration as a British citizen if you have previously given up your citizenship.
For most documents we require the original document, not a copy.
Your copy of your declaration of renunciation
You should send your copy of form RN1 or R6.
Evidence of your present citizenship or nationality
You should send:
- your passport or certificate of naturalisation or registration.
Evidence of your connection to the United Kingdom if you renounced citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies
You should send:
- the birth, naturalisation or registration certificate of the person through whom you have the connection; and
- evidence of your relationship to that person, for example birth, marriage and civil partnership certificates.
Evidence that if you had not given up your citizenship you would have lost or failed to acquire your current citizenship or nationality
You should send:
- a letter or statement confirming this from the authorities of the country concerned.
Evidence that you gave up citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies because you believed you would be deprived of your citizenship of a Commonwealth country unless you did so
You should send:
- a separate letter explaining why you believed this; and
- any documentary evidence you have to support this.
