How do I register as a British citizen if I am a British national with no other nationality?

This section provides details of how to register as a British citizen by descent if you are:

  • a British overseas citizen; or
  • a British protected person; or
  • a British subject
  • a British National (Overseas) (from 13 January 2010).

Registrations should be made using application form B(OS). Before you send us your form, you should ensure that you have read the eligibility section.

Before you make your application for citizenship you should read guide B(OS) - registration as a British citizen. This guide provides full details of the requirements you need to meet and how to complete the application form. You will need to confirm on the application form that you have read and understood the guide.

Lebanese nationals - applications under section 4B

Applications from possible Lebanese citizens, under section 4B of the British Nationality Act 1981, had been placed on hold because we were seeking expert opinion on the interpretation of Lebanese citizenship law. This matter has now been resolved, and details of our interpretation of Lebanese citizenship law are now included in our published guidance, which you can find in Annex D of Chapter 12 of our nationality caseworking instructions.
