Emergencies

This page explains how you can ask for immediate help in an emergency. If you do not need immediate help, see Help and advice for more information on finding various types of help.

For immediate help in an emergency, phone 999. The person who answers will connect you to a police station, the fire service, or the ambulance service.

This call is free from any phone, including a mobile phone, but you must only phone this number if it is an emergency, for example:

  • to report a crime that is occurring or that you believe is about to occur;
  • to report a fire;
  • to report a serious accident; or
  • to request an ambulance for someone who needs urgent hospital treatment.

If you need an interpreter, tell the person who answers the call which language you speak, so they can find the right interpreter for you quickly.
