Domestic violence

This page explains what domestic violence is and what help is available if you are the victim of this behaviour.

Domestic violence is any threatening behaviour, violence or abuse that occurs between adults who are together in a relationship, or were previously in a relationship. It includes physical, sexual and emotional abuse. It can also be behaviour of this type that occurs between family members, regardless of their age, gender, or sexuality.

There are many reasons why it may be difficult for you to report domestic violence. It is important that you know that it is safe to tell someone about it. If you tell us about it, we will help you, and give you choices about how you and your children will be protected.

The UK Border Agency will:

  • not tell anyone else what you have told us, unless you tell us we can do so;
  • protect your identity and if you have children we will protect their identity too; and
  • move you and your children to different accommodation.

You can also get help and advice from:

  • the person who provides your housing (if you are in housing arranged by the UK Border Agency);
  • a One Stop Service;
  • a police station; or
  • your case owner.

They will help you to contact the organisations that are always ready to give you and your children help and protection.
