Disability or special care

This page explains the help available if you are an asylum applicant who has a disability or needs special care.

If you have special needs because of a disability or health condition, you can contact social services in the area where you live. Social services are provided by the council in your area, and the support they offer is normally free of charge.

If you are living in housing arranged by the UK Border Agency, the person or organisation that provides your housing can help you to contact social services. Your local One Stop Service can also help.

The council will assess your needs and may decide to offer you different housing and extra support, known as community care.

Community care includes:

  • practical care in your home or elsewhere;
  • personal care;
  • someone you can talk to for advice or help;
  • cooked meals delivered to your home; and
  • monitoring of your health or ability to do things for yourself.
