Reporting to the UK Border Agency

We need you to report if you have made an asylum claim, or if you have no right to remain in the UK.

There are several reasons why you may have no basis to remain here:

  • if you have entered the UK illegally and UK Border Agency officials or the police have been informed;
  • by making an application to remain in the UK, which the agency has rejected;
  • by failing to comply with the conditions attached to previous leave to enter or remain, such as overstaying the period of leave allowed, or working without permission; or
  • when criminal behaviour or character and conduct mean you should be deported.

If you have no right to remain in the UK you should leave, and until you do, you may be detained. Reporting is an alternative to detention and gives you an opportunity to make your own arrangements to leave the United Kingdom, before the agency enforces your departure.

Reporting allows us to remain in contact with you. It allows regular communication, so:

  • we can ask for information to assist with our consideration of your situation; and
  • you can ask for information on the progress of any applications you have made.

We state how often you need to report to us on your reporting directions (IS96). When you attend, we will tell you when your next reporting date is.

We will decide on how often you need to report to us by looking at:

  • your personal circumstances; and
  • your immigration history, including your compliance with the restrictions we ask you to follow.
